Surprise! Tesla Model S has a 007 Submarine Mode
The Tesla Model S nets significant attention for its electric driving range, impressive roadholding, and of course its Insane Mode for unbridled acceleration. But now the Model S is grabbing headlines for a wildly different reason – its secret “Submarine Mode.”
With the right combination of buttons and a 007 password, drivers can transform the Model S image on the car’s infotainment system to none other than James Bond’s Lotus Esprit submarine from the 1977 film, The Spy Who Loved Me. YouTube user Josh Heffner filmed how to access the clandestine Easter egg. Take a look.
While this might sound like a very odd feature to include in the car… its origins are known. Back in 2013, Tesla CEO Elon Musk famously purchased Bond’s legendary Lotus sub at a cost of $866,000.For a time there were even rumors that Musk was thinking of turning the Lotus into a fully-functioning submersible. To our knowledge that has yet to happen, but at least you can share in his ’70s spy movie experience.
Want to try it out? Simply hold down the ‘T’ on the Model S infotainment screen until the service window appears. Plug in the ’007′ digits, and voila! As an added bonus you can also adjust the sub’s operating depths, all the way down to 20,000 leagues… under the sea. (No, this won’t actually turn your car into a submarine.)
